ePrescribe (eRx)
E-prescribing is the use of a computer, handheld device, or other hardware with software that allows prescribers to:- Electronically access information regarding drug benefits coverage and medication history with a patient’s consent.
- Electronically transmit the prescription to the patient’s choice of local or mail order pharmacy.
- Receive electronically transmitted prescription renewal requests from a pharmacy
- Support the entire medication management process – prescribe, transmit, dispense, administer, and monitor.
- Check drug-drug and drug-allergy interactions.
In addition, e-Prescribing is a required component to meet Stage 1 requirements for the CMS EHR Incentive (Meaningful Use) Program.
Failure to e-prescribe in 2011 can lead to a Medicare Fee for Service allowable charges payment reduction in 2012 and beyond.
